While watching flitetest’s video on Airfoils, they constructed a KFm3 style stepped airfoil to replace a damaged wing on their Cessna model. The one disadvantage is that they are a little bit involved, compared to the two designs that follow, but they aren’t really difficult, and I suspect that they might perform better than simple KFm airfoils, although mine have pretty blunt leading edges, which could make for higher drag than you might like, at least for high speed flights.
FOAM BOARD AIRFOIL DESIGN HOW TO
I used a piece of 3/16″ dowel to stiffen it (carbon fiber would be better, but I was just experimenting).Įd’s videos show in great detail how to make these, if they interest you, go review those. The version that I have here isn’t the fancy version, with the knife-edge trailing edge, but it’s pretty nice. The nice thing about these is that they have a nice airfoil shape. The first of these is the so-called Armin Wing, championed by Ed on the Experimental Airlines channel. I ended up making three different wings from Dollar Tree foamboard, and thought it might be nice to show what they look like, and what I learned in building a few of them. But I have been thinking alot about wings, and wing fabrications. I’ve been meaning to try to find something a little tamer than my Nutball to fly (it seems to be a bit twitchy) but I haven’t really done too much other than watch videos on YouTube and scout around on the rcgroups forums for inspiration. 3K CF Tubes (1.Okay, I haven’t had much time to work on RC airplanes.3K CF Tubes (1.0mm Wall Thickness) New Sizes!.Balsa Wood Sheets, Strips & Dowels In Stock.3 Pack Swappable (Nutball, Flyer and Delta). We used these values so that we could matchup our results against the test results on the above comparison article. The spacing between the books was kept at 16”.

We took a 10”x20” sheet, laid it up across two piles of books and added weight till it broke down. Inspired by the Dollar Tree Foamboard comparison done here: The closest to the Dollar Tree Foam in weight is the FliteBoardLite. Scratch builders across UK, Europe and Australia have also struggled to find a material that weighs like the DTF board and have used heavier materials. Even within the US several modellors have been using Elmers Brand of Foamboard, which is almost twice as heavy. Unfortunately it is not available outside the US. Without any doubt, the Dollar Tree foamboard is the lightest of the foamboards. Weight is the most important criteria, in the aeromodelling application of paper laminated Foamboards. Which has some real good work done in documenting the parameters. In this article we have compared the following FoamBoards:Īt the time of writing this article, we had no access to DTF and Elmers board, so we have based our numbers against the thread :

I am sure everyone would be interested to see, know and learn about the difference between the 2 FliteBoard offerings : PRO and LITE, and also how they fare against the popular DTF ( Dollar Tree Foam boards ).
